Romulo P. Baquiran, Jr. is a poet and teacher of Creative Writing at the U.P. Department of Filipino.
He has edited many books, among which are Pablo Neruda: Mga Piling Tula with National Artist Virgilio Almario, and Kuwentong Siyudad with Roland B. Tolentino and Alwin Aguirre. He has also worked with Mario Miclat and produced the tribute Beauty for Ashes: Remembering Maningning Miclat.
Baquiran’s Onyx won the National Book Award in 2003. His Singsing ni Solomon is available as an e-book at http://www.pantas.ph/singsing.pdf . He has also authored Mga Tula ng Paglusong.
He was born on February 18, 1962 in Sto. Tomas, Isabela. He is a poet, fictionist, translator and literature teacher in the University of the Philippines. He earned his AB Filipino in the same university in 1984. Some of his publications include Unang Bagting (co-editor, cook of poems, 1988), anthologized in Engkwentro (fiction, 1990), and Parikala (book of poems, 1990). Onyx was published by the UP Press.
Joey has received several awards and grants like Palanca Awards in 1988, 1989 and 1990; Likhaan Awards in 1987; fellowship in UP Writers Workshop in 1987; and fellowship in Siliman Writers Workshop in 1989. He is also a member of LIRA, TELON, Katha and Oragon Poets’ Circle.
He has served as deputy director of the UP ICW and is now a fellow for poetry.
