Nieves B. Epistola was born in July 24, 1926 in Pangasinan. She was a poet and a fictionist. She married fictionist-essayist Silvino V. Epistola. She obtained her bachelor of science in education from UP in 1950 and a master of arts degree from Harvard University. Since 1951, she had taught at the UP DECL, College of Arts and Sciences and later the College of Arts and Letters where she was associate dean, 1985-1991. She was a member of the Folklore Society of the Philippines, Literary League of the Philippines, UMPIL, PEN International, and the International Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Mrs. E, as she was fondly called, had published a book of poems, Re/Collections, in 1991, and edited Filipino Femaleship: A Diliman Review Reader in 1990.

She read her critical works in national and international conferences and symposia. Among these articles are: “English in Twenty-First Century Philippines,” 1983; “Linguistic Structures in Angela Manalang Gloria’s Poetry” and “Structuralism: The Linguistic Basis of Literary Criticism,” 1989; “Paz Marquez-Benitez’s Dead Stars” A : Post-Structuralist Reading,” 1990; and “Filipino Femaleship: An Alternative Image of Woman in Philippine Cinema,” 1991.
