Six first-time authors have been shortlisted for the 2016 Madrigal-Gonzalez First Book Award, which is given to the best first book by a Filipino writer.
These are Zero A.D. for Überman, RM Topacio-Aplaon for Lila ang Kulay ng Pamamaalam, Rogelio Braga for Sa Pagdating ng mga Barbaro at Iba Pang Mga Dula, Mar Anthony Simon Dela Cruz for Isang Gabi sa Quezon Avenue at iba pang kwento, Chuckberry Pascual for Kumpisal, Tepai Pascual for Maktan 1521.
Überman is the story of a superhero for a new kind of era. Lila ang Kulay ng Pamamaalam, is a tale of farewell. Sa Pagdating ng mga Barbaro at Iba Pang Mga Dula tackles Filipino and Moro relations. Isang Gabi sa Quezon Avenue at iba pang kwento tells the stories of the struggle between the oppressors and the oppressed. Kumpisal focuses on tales from the streets and alleys of Manila. Maktan 1521 is a graphic novel about Lapu-Lapu and Magellan’s battle at Mactan.
The winner of the 2016 Madrigal-Gonzalez First Book Award will be announced during the UP Writer’s Night on December 2, 2016.
The Madrigal-Gonzalez First Book Award alternates each year between books written in Filipino and English. This year’s award will be given to a book written in Filipino.
