MANILA INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR SLATED
The 29th Manila International Book Fair will be held from September 12 to 16, 2008, 10:00 A.M.to 8:00 P.M. at Halls 1-4, SMX Convention Center in SM Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

CALLING ALL FILIPINA POETS
Poet Luisa Igloria has signed up as volunteer in the conference staff for the first web-based Women's Poetry Conference (Wompherence) being planned by the Wom-po (Women's Poetry) List, for November 2008. One new initiative of theirs is the curating of an International Poetry section, to include a special sub-section featuring Filipina poets (writing in English or in any Philippine language as long as there is an accompanying English translation of the work). Submissions must be sent on or before September 15, 2008.
One does not have to register as a Wom-po member, nor to register for the Wompherence, in order to participate in this section. Other details of the Wompherence do require registration.

TWO WRITING WORKSHOPS AT A DIFFERENT BOOKSTORE IN SERENDRA
A Different Bookstore in Serendra will be hosting two workshops by Mookie Katigbak and Angelo R. Lacuesta.
"Lightning In The Mind" with Mookie Katigbak will be on August 29 and September 5. It will be a two-part poetry workshop highlighting image and meaning in poetry.
"Telling The Untold" with Angelo R. Lacuesta will be on the next day, August 28 and September 4. Lacuesta will handle this two-part writing workshop highlighting the art and the craft of fiction.
All author's proceeds to go to World Vision. he registration fee of P750 to cover resource book, snacks and workshop materials. Participants will also receive a permanent 12% discount card from A Different Bookstore.

Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa
Ngayong Agosto, ipinagdiriwang ng bansa ang Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa. Ang pagdiriwang ngayon ay may tema na "Wika Mo, Wikang Filipino, Wika ng Mundo, Mahalaga!" Muling pangungunahan ng Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino ang naturang taunang pagdiriwang na umaalinsunod sa Proklamasyon Blg. 1041.
Kaugnay nito, muling bubuksan ang timpalak sa Gawad Komisyon sa Sanaysay-Gantimpalang Collantes na nasa wikang Filipino. Ito ay isang timpalak sa pagsulat ng pormal na sanaysay na itinatatguyod kapuwa ng Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino at Jorge Collantes Foundation kaugnay ng taunang pagdiriwang ng “Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa” (Agosto 1-31, 2008).

UMPIL to hold its 34th Convention at the CCP
The Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL) will hold its 34th convention at the GSIS Museum of the Cultural Center of the Philippines near the corner of Roxas Boulevard and Buendia Avenue. This will be on 30 August from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Special guest of honor South Korean novelist Bang Hyun-seok will discuss the theme "Trading Words, Tracing Worlds."
A meeting discussing the Writers Welfare Act will follow. The Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas will be given out by 1 p.m. This year's winners will receive trophies created by renowned artist Manuel Baldemor. They are:

5th Lamiraw Workshop Calls for Fellowship Applications
The 5th Lamiraw Creative Writing Workshop calls for applications to a 3-day writing fellowship which will be held at Tiburcio Tancinco Memorial Institute of Science and Technology (TTMIST), Calbayog City , Samar .
Panelists invited in said workshop are Dr. Leoncio Deriada from Iloilo City ; Prof. Merlie Alunan and Dr. Victo Sugbo from UP Tacloban; Dr. David Genotiva from EVSU, Tacloban City; and Mr. Dante Rosales from Calbayog City.
Twenty-five slots are at stake; seventeen of which are allotted for writers residing in Samar, Leyte and Biliran while three of which are affirmatively reserved for Abaknon speakers in Capul, Northern Samar, and the remaining five fellowships are open to writers outside Region VIII, preferably coming from Bicol, Masbate and Romblon. Applicants will be admitted given that their works pass the aesthetic standard of the Selection Committee. Writers may send entries in Waray, Cebuano, or English. Entries written in Abaknon, Bicol or in any language spoken in Masbate and Romblon must bear Waray or English translation.
If you are a writer, send us a collection of any of the following: 3 poems, 1 short story, 2 essays, 1 one-act play, or any reasonable combination of the above in hardcopy and a diskette containing the manuscripts and your application form in Microsoft Word, font 12, Arial. Teachers of literature will be admitted on a first-come-first served basis and will have to pay a registration fee of P3,000.00 each.

THE GOLDEN CHILD – East Meets West at the CCP
What idiosyncrasies transpire when modernity catches up with tradition? When East finally meets West?
Tanghalang Pilipino, in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines , attempts to give answers to this philosophical question by staging David Hwang's “The Golden Child” until September 7, 8 p.m. at the CCP's Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino.
David Hwang is the celebrated playwright of M. Butterfly and is part-Filipino. His ancestors come from Cebu and Manila . Hwang has received three Tony Award nominations. He is based in the US .
“The Golden Child” opened at the CCP Little Theater on Aug. 8, 8 p.m., the very same date and hour the Olympic Games opened in Beijing .
It stars Irma Adlawan, Liesl Batucan, Tess Jamias, Leo Rialp, and two US-based actors, Tina Chilip and Art Acuna (an Obie winner for “Magno Rubio”), plus the Tanghalang Pilipino Actors' Company.
Coincidentally, as it sets about posing questions on identity, assimilation and culture, “The Golden Child” will share a near-simultaneous run at the CCP with the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical juggernaut “Cinderella,” starring Lea Salonga, which opens July 29 at the Main Theater.
That audacious counter-programming move on TP's part should make for interesting, provocative theater-going in the next month or so.
Hwang, in a brief excerpt of a taped interview played during the press con, was heard talking about “The Golden Child” and reciting the monologue of the First Wife. It ended with a question that roughly sums up the issues at the heart of the play: “How much change can people endure?”

UP Press launches Centennial Publications

The University of the Philippines Press launched its Centennial Publications on July 10, 2008 at Balay Kalinaw, UP Diliman.
The Centennial Publications were chosen by the UP Press from all the books it has published since it was established in 1965. UP Press Director Maria Luisa Camagay introduced the books as part of the history of the country’s foremost academic publishing house.
In her message, UP President Emerlinda Roman said that, aside from the Centennial Lecture Series, which is the centerpiece of UP’s centennial celebration, the Centennial Publications constitute another academic project celebrating excellence, service, and leadership.
She lauded the UP Press for its untiring efforts to publish quality works by leading experts in various fields, and urged the younger UP writers to write more and publish more.
As part of the program, UP Press Editorial Board Member Dr. Ramon Santos explained that the criteria for choosing the titles were relevance, quality of content and style, peer and other reviews, uniqueness in the field, and timelessness.
The books were divided into the Social Sciences, Humanities, Sciences, and Literature categories. Literature was divided into six sub-categories.

UP celebrates Philippine literature

On July 8, 2008, the UP Institute of Creative Writing (UP-ICW) and the UP Centennial Commission awarded the winners of the Gawad Likhaan: the UP Centennial Literary Prize.
The winners were presented to a gathering that included National Artists F. Sionil Jose, Napoleon Abueva, Virgilio Almario, and Bienvenido Lumbera, and some of the country’s most distinguished writers.
The winners were: Jerry B. Gracio (poetry in Filipino for “Aves”); Jose Rey Munsayac (fiction in Filipino for his novel “Duguang Kamay sa Nilulumot na Pader”); Lualhati M. Abreu (creative nonfiction in Filipino for “Agaw Dilim, Agaw Liwanag”); Jose Marte A. Abueg (poetry in English for “Bird Lands, River Nights and Other Melancholies”); and Criselda D. Yabes (creative nonfiction in English for “Sarena’s Story: The Loss of a Kingdom,” and fiction in English for “Below the Crying Mountain”).

Each winner received a cash prize of PhP 200,000.00 for each category as well as a certificate of recognition from the UP Centennial Commission and the ICW. Former University President and Centennial Commission Chair Senator Edgardo J. Angara and Regent Nelia T. Gonzalez presented the winners their certificates during the ceremony.
In her opening remarks on behalf of UP President Emerlinda R. Roman, Regent Gonzalez traced the University’s role in the development of the Philippine Literature adding that we should be proud of our literature in all our languages, since “all great nations have powerful images of their unity as a people,” and it is these “critical images of ourselves… that give us both roots and wings.”
The panel of judges consisted of: Almario, Prof. Vim Nadera, and Prof. Romulo Baquiran, Jr. (poetry in Filipino); Prof. Jun Cruz Reyes, Dr. Roland Tolentino, and Dr. Soledad Reyes of Ateneo de Manila University (fiction in Filipino); and Lumbera, Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, and Prof. Fanny Garcia of De La Salle University (creative nonfiction in Filipino); Dr. J. Neil Garcia, University Professor Emeritus Gemino H. Abad, and Prof. Ricky de Ungria (poetry in English); Dr. Jose Dalisay, Dr. Rosario Lucero, and Prof. Vicente Groyon of De La Salle (fiction in English); and Dr. Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, Professor Emeritus Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio, and Prof. Charlson Ong (creative nonfiction in English).
Almario praised Gracio for “transcending the pull of conventional and traditional poetics.” Reyes described Munsayac as “a novelist with social consciousness for whom narrative is not only personal but a vehicle for social change.” Lumbera cited Abreu’s use of “the novelist’s techniques to tell the life story of a woman who has lived and stood by her revolutionary beliefs” and credited her with raising the standard of writing creative nonfiction writing in Filipino.
Garcia described Abueg’s “Bird Lands” a “meditative collection” of “formally daring and numinous lyrics” which are “pleasurable affirmations of the unbounded life that animates all of creation.” Hidalgo called Yabes a “new voice in Philippine fiction in English,” and praised her for “not flinch[ing] in the portrayal of the dismal situation in Mindanao and, presenting it in a manner both intelligent and moving.” And the new UP-ICW director Dr. Jose Y. Dalisay, lauded “Sarena’s Story” for being “exquisitely nuanced, sophisticated, and sensitive.”
Dr. Gémino H. Abad, the competition’s overall director, served as the event’s master of ceremonies, while UP-ICW Associates Profs. Vim Nadera and Ricardo M. de Ungria read selections from the winners of the poetry categories in both English and Filipino.

Gracio has written numerous screenplays and won a National Book Award in 2006 for his first poetry collection, Apokripos. Munsayac is the editor of the Bulacan-based weekly, Dyaryong Pilipino Luzon Times, and in 1998, he shared the first prize with Jun Cruz Reyes in the novel in Filipino category of the National Centennial Literary Awards. Lualhati Abreu is taking her Master’s in History at UP Diliman and has done research and writing for non-government organizations. Jose Marte Abueg is the managing editor of Inquirer.net and has previously won at the Carlos Palanca and the Philippines Free Press literary awards. Criselda Yabes is a freelance journalist and writer who has worked for the Associated Press (AP), Reuters, Newsweek, The Washington Post, and The Economist. She has authored three books whose topics range from the coup d’etats of the 1980s, to the almost extinct Pala’wan syllabary.

Abad’s poems translated into Italian
Thirty-six poems by distinguished poet and University Professor Emeritus Prof. Gémino H. Abad have been translated into Italian and will be published in Rome as a new collection titled Dove le parole non si spezzano (Where No Words Break). The poems in the new collection were selected from Prof. Abad’s In Ordinary Time: Poems, Parables, Poetics, 1973-2003 (UP Press, 2004) and translated by celebrated Italian poets Gezim Hajdari and Amoá Fatuiva. To be published by the Associazione Culturale Allegorein, a leading cultural association based in Rome and one of the organizers of the Mediterranean International Festival of Literature and the Arts, the collection will be launched in 2009.
Prof. Abad, who represented the country in the festival in 2006, has been invited by festival director Prof. Filippo Bettini to be one of the 2009 festival’s special guests. The collection of translated poems has also been entered in competition for the prestigious 2009 Feronia Prize, also sponsored by Allegorein.
Abad is an active member of Board of Advisers of the UP Institute of Creative Writing (ICW).

Isang seminar ukol sa panulaan at wikang Filipino ang idaraos sa 27 Agosto 2008, Miyerkules, 8:00 n.u.-5:00 n.h. sa TARC (Thomas Aquinas Research Complex) Seminar Rooms 1 at 2, Unibersidad ng Sto. Tomas. Pinamagatan itong Tulawikaan, isang serye ng mga panayam ng mga dalubwikang kasapi ng Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika at Anyo (LIRA), isang organisasyon ng mga makatang nagsusulat sa Filipino na binuo noong 1985. Ilan sa mga tagapagsalita ay ang mga premyadong makata at akademiko na sina Prop. Vim Nadera, Jr. ng UP Diliman/UST, Prop. Michael Coroza ng Ateneo de Manila University/UST, Prop. Ang pangkalahatang paksa ay ang pagtuturo ng wika sa pamamagitan ng tula . All you have to do is bring any children's or young adult book that you want to share, discuss, ask questions about, or use as a springboard for discussion. Or, bring your work in progress for a children's book - either a manuscript or artwork - and ask for a group critique.
We collect an attendance fee of P80 for members and P100 for non-members, which mostly goes to ordering a hot or cold drink for you during the meeting.

Chiaroscuro Book Launching
Chiaroscuro , the debut collection of poems by Joel M. Toledo, will be launched on August 4, 2008 at mag:net café along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City . Book signing and cocktails commence at 6:30pm in the café's gallery area, followed by the fortnightly Happy Mondays poetry reading at 8pm.
Reading poems from Toledo's book are poets and fictionists which include Marjorie Evasco, Jimmy Abad, Krip Yuson, Butch Dalisay, Neil Garcia, Marne Kilates, Rebecca Añonuevo, Sarge Lacuesta, Mookie Katigbak, Angelo Suarez, Ramil Gulle, Mikael Co, Larry Ypil, Daryll Delgado, Conchitina Cruz, Arkaye Kierulf, Pancho Villanueva, Khavn Dela Cruz, Rafael San Diego, Marie La Viña, and Joseph Saguid.
The event will be hosted by Radioactive Sago Project frontman and award-winning poet Lourd De Veyra. The bands Los Chupacabras and Dead Pop Stars will be performing after.
Chiaroscuro is made up of poems from Toledo 's 2004 and 2005 Palanca-winning collections plus selected new works, with a foreword from Dr. Marjorie Evasco.
Toledo holds a Masters degree in Creative Writing (Poetry) from the University of the Philippines in Diliman. He is currently t eaching Literature at Miriam College . He was the recipient of several local and foreign awards for poetry, which include the 2006 Bridport Prize, the 2006 Meritage Press Poetry Prize, the NCCA Writers Prize, and two Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards. He was co-editor of Caracoa 2006 , the 25 th anniversary issue of the official literary journal of the Philippine Literary Arts Council (PLAC).

Balagtasan: Its History and Practice
LIRA (Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo), in partnership with the Ortigas Foundation, invites you to a lecture on The History of Balagtasan. Lecturer Dr. Galileo Zafra is a literary historian,critic, and professor at the University of the Philippines.

7th Annual Barlaya Workshop
Adarna House, the country's first children's book publishing firm will hold the 7th Annual Barlaya Workshop on October 3 and 4. The theme for this year's Barlaya is Writing and Designing NonFiction Books for Children. Writers and designers who would like to participate in the workshop shall go through a screening process.

25 Best-Loved Children's Book Characters Exhibit
After surveying hundreds of Filipino children, here is an exhibit of life-size sculptures of the 25 best-loved children's book characters. The sculptures are done by members of Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang InK). The exhibit will be displayed at the Atrium of the Cultural Center of the Philippines from July 16 to August 6, and at the SMX Convention Center from September 12 to 16, during the Manila International Book Fair.
