ORTIGAS FOUNDATION LIBRARY HOSTS AUTHOR VIRGINIA HANSEN-HOLMES

The Ortigas Foundation Library invites the public to a talk by Virginia Hansen-Holmes, author of Guerrilla Daughter. This will be on Thursday, November 5 at 6pm.

Guerrilla Daughter is a memoir of a family's extraordinary struggle to survive the Japanese occupation of Mindanao from the spring of 1942 until the end of the war in September 1945. The men in the family fought as guerrilla soldiers in the island's resistance movement , while Holmes, her mother, and her older sister were left to their own resources to evade the Japanese, who had been given orders to execute Americans. The Hansen women, faced with immediate death if found and suffering from hunger, disease, and barely tolerable living conditions, hid out in the Philippine jungle and remote villages to remain just ahead of the growing Japanese presence and avoid capture.

Using original documents and papers belonging to her father, as well as her own vivid recollections and the reminiscences of her siblings, Virginia Hansen Holmes presents this gripping and compelling account of extraordinary survival.

Virginia Hansen Holmes graduated from the Colegio de Jesus-Maria in the Philippines when the war ended and came to the United States in 1954. After her marriage to Kent Holmes in 1958, several of his foreign assignments with the U.S. government took them back to the Philippines. They now live in Virginia .

The Ortigas Foundation Library is located at the 2 nd Floor of Ortigas Building, Ortigas corner Meralco Avenues. Ortigas Center , Pasig City . For more information and to register please call 631.1231 to 38 local 222 or email: ortigasfoundation@ortigas.com.ph

REGARDING FRANZ BOOK LAUNCH IN UP DILIMAN

The Arcellana clan is inviting literature lovers to the book launch of Regarding Franz, edited by Dr. Elizabeth Arcellana-Nuqui and Prof. Lydia Rodriguez-Arcellana and published by the University of the Philippines Press.

The volume is a rich collection of memories of National Artist Franz Arcellana from colleagues like fellow National Artists Nick Joaquin and Virgilio Almario; writer-friends like Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo , Jose Y. Dalisay Jr., and Gemino Abad; former students; and family members as well, including a loving tribute from his widow Dr. Emerenciana Arcellana. Regarding Franz also features poems written for Franz, incisive interviews, and photographs provided by the Arcellana family.

The book is a solid testament to the art and life of one of the most beloved National Artists and perhaps one of the most influential fictionists the country has ever produced, according to novelist Charlson Ong. Anecdotes of generosity and flashes of his personality provide glimpses into Arcellana, the founding director of the UP Creative Writing Center (now Institute), the man and the artist.

Regarding Franz will be launched on October 27, 2009 (Tuesday), 3 p.m. at the Bulwagang Rizal ( Faculty Center ) in UP Diliman. Visit uppress.com.ph or call its Marketing division at 926-6642 for more details.

JOIN THE 4TH TANGHAL FESTIVAL, AN ANNUAL UNIVERSITY-BASED FESTIVAL

TANGHAL, an annual theater festival for university-based theater groups in the Philippines , is the flagship project of the National Committee on Dramatic Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts as its contribution to the Philippine International Arts Festival in February 2010. Planned as a festive harvest of contemporary university theater practices and a coming together of prolific theater groups, memorable productions, and student performing artists from the different universities, the festival highlights representative outstanding performances from the various university theater companies all over the country.

The 4th TANGHAL is projected to be a creative and dynamic platform for university theater groups to meet, share and showcase their most exciting works and experiences. To consciously describe, recognize and situate the past to present remarkable contributions of student theater movements/practices into the national socio-cultural contexts, the festival provides venues and avenues for productive discussions that will in broad strokes float, surface, assess, document and thereby gather realizations, inspirations and adoptable/adaptable learning from the dynamic multi-cultural realities (artistic narratives/concepts/forms/styles/sources/discourses, local production processes/methodologies/resources, regional approaches/perspectives, creative technologies/innovations, organizational orientations/strategies, and regional networking/engagements) of the national university theater conditions and systems. With all these in great consideration, the 4th TANGHAL as well hopes to be a proper locus in the initial discussions on the propositions, feasibility assessments, mechanisms, formulations of establishing a formal national network of university/college-based theater groups.

This year's festival, as co-presented by the University of Makati, Makati City and the Alyansa, Inc. (a network of cultural groups from schools, churches, communities and workplaces in Metro Manila), will be held from February 1 to 5, 2010. The final venue will be announced soon. (Target venue: De La Salle University and DLSU College of St. Benilde, Taft Avenue , Manila .)

To characterize the college-based theater sector that actively works to contribute in the development and transformation of education through the medium of theater, the theme for 4th TANGHAL is fittingly:

“Dulaan ng Kabataan para sa Mapagpalaya at Mapagpabagong Edukasyon”

TALES OF THE MANUVU PERFORMANCE AT THE CCP

Ballet Philippines second offering for its 40th anniversary season features an exciting musical journey that begins with Venezuelan piano music in the international ballet classic “Our Waltzes” and culminates in a contemporary production of Alice Reyes's groundbreaking pop rock opera ballet “Tales of the Manuvu.”

Written by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera, Manuvu promises a definite feast for the eyes and ears as we employ multimedia technology in our retelling of the Manobo myth of creation. With vibrant sets and costumes, celebrity singers and musicians make Manuvu folklore meld seamlessly with dance to bring us a tale of our origins, our mortality and with the separation of heaven and earth, the lesson on how one must be the master of his own tale. It also features the music of Dero Pedero.

Performances at the CCP Main Theater are on October 23, 24, and 25. For tickets call ballet Philippines at 551-0221/ 551-1003 or Ticket World at 891-9999.

PROVISIONS FOR A JOURNEY: AN INTRODUCTION TO TRAVEL WRITING

Let us help you polish the “writer” in travel writer. You may have been to many places all over the Philippines or all over the world. Go back to these places by writing about them–be it on your journal, your blog, or a soon-to-be published article in a travel magazine. After all, “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection,” as writer and diarist Anais Nin said.

In “Provisions for a Journey: An Introduction to Travel Writing,” let’s work on your writing skills just before you travel or perhaps, after you’ve traveled the world. The class will be held at the Ortigas Foundation Library on October 17, 2009 from 9:30am-5pm. Workshop fee is just P2,500.

To register, email dbw.workshops@gmail.com and request for a form. For more details, visit designedbywords.wordpress.com.

Published by the College of Liberal Arts of De La Salle University, Ideya was conceived in 1999 to further critical exchange among eminent and upcoming scholars in the fields of humanities in the Philippines and in the Pacific; to disseminate new forms of knowledge about various literary, artistic, and cultural texts in the Philippines and in the southeast Asian region; and to provide an avenue for the publication of the works of established and young creative writers. Ideya is one of the Philippine journals listed in the MLA International Bibliography.

Members of the editorial board include:

Articles on history, criticism, and theory that are related to any field of the humanities will still be considered, though the bulk of the issue will be devoted to creative writing.

All contributions—creative work or research—are blind refereed.

Creative works and articles should not exceed 30 typewritten or computer-encoded pages, double-spaced on short bond paper (8.5” x 11”).
